Welcome to the home page for Cecilia Tan's latest book on baseball, FIFTY GREATEST YANKEES GAMES, a recounting of fifty great games from Yankees history, from 1904 to the present.
The book is due out on Opening Day 2005, so you still have time to nominate games to the top 50 list, and to enter to win a copy of the book when it comes out! Register to participate in the free Fifty Greatest Discussion Forum, and post your idea of a great game, and you will automatically be entered to win!
News And Updates:
May 23: Final Voting for Final Game!
Voting is taking place in the discussion forum for what is the last game I should fit into the book. There are also polls at NYYFans.com, the Behind the Bombers forum, and YankeesMania/The Yankees Board. The other 49 games have been turned in to the publisher for editorial review. I'll now do some tweaking and fixing, and also finish the bibliography, and that will be that for the moment. A draft of the cover design is also now available, have a peek HERE.
April 15: Interviews Up On The Forum
Just about all the interviews I did as research on the book are available for reading in the 50 Greatest Forum. Paul O'Neill, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Reggie Jackson, Don Mattingly, and many, many others. Bookmark http://50greatest.spellbook.net/phpBB2/ for where the transcripts can be found.
February 3: Discussion Forum Open
The discussion forum is ready for folks to post their opinions about the greatest games! What was the greatest game you ever saw? Wished you had seen? What are your top ten home runs in Yankees history? Nominate, vote, debate, reminisce, all in the Fifty Greatest Discussion Forum. I will be posting interview excerpts and other goodies there, as well.
January 15: Initial Submission
Well, the manuscript's first draft is complete through games in 1949, or just under half way. Right on schedule!
October 12: History in the Making
I have several chapters finished at this point, but I find it hard to concentrate on the library research I need to do when the Yankees are playing great games every single night. Yesterday's beanball war at Fenway is NOT likely to make the top fifty list. But it is possible that some game this October might end up in there!
July 6: We Have Liftoff
Terms of the deal are done and I am starting work this weekend. I've already begun to research the brief career of Bert Daniels. Who was Bert Daniels and why was he important? Back in 1912, when the Yankees were still the Highlanders, Daniels became the first player on the franchise to hit for the cycle. I've also started note-gathering on Jim Abbott's 1993 no-hitter.
June 28: Contract Offer On The Table
Well, it has finally happened. John Wiley & Sons Publishers has made me an offer for my book on the fifth greatest Yankees games of all time. My agent is going back to them to ask for additional money to cover photograph permissions, since the contract asks for those, but it looks like the book is really going to happen. The due date of the manuscript is March 15, 2004, and the book should be in print and on shelves by Opening Day 2005.
Join the Debate!
What was the best Yankees game you ever saw/heard/attended? What was the best post-season game? Regular season game? Best pitching performance? Best game against the Red Sox? Best loss? Best offensive performance? Who was the best player you ever saw? Or wish you had seen?
Weigh in and discuss your picks with other Yankee fans in our discussion forum. Reminisce about the games you remember, and read about the ones that were before your time. Compare the greats of today with the Yankee stars of yesteryear.
